Hockey in the Treasure Valley
Chances are you’ve only really heard about football when it comes to sports in the Boise area. Well, those of you that love the ice will be pleased to hear that Boise isn’t all football, but is home to both a minor league hockey team (the Steelheads) as well as many youth and adult hockey programs. So, for those of you who love a game of hockey or enjoying going out and smack the puck around yourself, you will be pleased with what you find here in Boise.
The Idaho Steelheads
One of Boise’s many minor and developmental teams, the Steelheads are some of the best hockey players in the Northwest and probably the most well-known sports teams in the valley (after the Broncos, of course).
They play down at the CenturyLink Arena in downtown Boise. Their season normally goes from late fall to early spring with both home and away games against other minor league teams from around the United States and Canada. They have only been in Boise for 15 or so years, but they sure have made a name for themselves as they have made it to the playoffs and finals almost every year since the teams beginning.
It doesn’t matter your age or experience level, there is a hockey league for you to enjoy. At Idaho Ice World, the city-owned ice rink on the edge of town, there are youth teams, adult teams, teams for all experience levels, and even lessons for beginners with little to no skating experience. So, even if it has only been a dream of yours to play hockey, you may fulfill it here!
The leagues and teams don’t cost much, though, you do need to have all your own gear and a USA Hockey Membership. They can be very fun and great for exercise. However, if you just want to go skating, you may do that at Idaho Ice World as well. Just be sure you check the schedule as Ice World houses two of the only four rinks in the city.
