For most of us, we like when our homes are well lit. It makes them more functional, more inviting, and homier. Not to mention it gives the home brighter atmosphere as well. However, not many people are up to hiring an electrician to wire up new lights if the rooms in your home aren’t as bright as one would like. So, that leaves quite a few people in a conundrum: How can I brighten up my home without new light fixtures? Well, that is the question we are going to endeavor to answer today. Below we have a few ideas for lightening up a room without the need to hire an electrician.
The first thing you should think about when trying to make your home seem brighter is buying better bulbs. Nowadays there are almost thousands of options of light bulbs to choose from so you will almost always be able to upgrade to a better one. Talk with some of the helpful folks at the hardware store about the fixtures you have and they should be able to guide you to some better bulbs that will brighten up things a little. The great thing about getting new bulbs is that most of the new bulbs are more efficient making them great for your wallet and the earth in the long run.
When you are looking for brighter bulbs, just keep in mind that they might be a bit more expensive than you are used to. This is because they will both be brighter but also more efficient like we talked about earlier. The great thing though is that normally these bulbs will last longer as well.
Another awesome thing you can look forward to with new bulbs are the ones that are remotely controllable. Look at some of the new Wi-Fi enabled lightbulbs while you are at the hardware store, they can be quite handy since they can be controlled right from your phone!
If you don’t want to worry about getting better bulbs, or have already gotten the best the hardware store has to offer, you may consider buying a few mirrors. These will give you a lot more light from the light sources you already have. This is because they will bounce the light coming in from the windows or from the light bulbs to other parts of the room. While there won’t be any extra light coming through, it will spread out the light a bit more in essence.
When you do this you will want to place the mirrors in optimal positions to both catches and cast the light. So, maybe try to place them just across from a window and angle it a bit upward so that the light will be cast up to the ceiling or the center of the room. You will need to experiment in your own home until you find the best positioning and arrangement.
Mirrors are quite inexpensive when you really start searching. Whether you decide to buy them online or in the store you can usually find mirrors to fit any budget— and not just simple mirrors either. You can usually find mirrors that no only fit your budget but also match your style and décor as well. So don’t feel like you need to buy a massive or intricate mirror from an expensive boutique, a specialty shop, or online store. An inexpensive one will do just as well.
Light colored walls
Another thing you can do to lighten up your home is to repaint. Now, you can’t just repaint and call it good, you need to repaint your home with a light color. This can be white, off-white, yellow, or anything else for that matter as long as it is a light shade. The ones that seem to work best though are the whites and off-whites like we suggested earlier, however. The reason this works is because lighter colors reflect more light than darker ones. There is a more scientific reason behind it, but for the sake of time let’s just say that they are more ‘reflective’. By painting rooms with lighter colors, you are in effect making each of the walls a giant, less effective, mirror.
The benefit of this option is that it will give you pretty great results for a pretty low cost. Again, talk to the folks at the hardware store about which colors, types, and brands work the best for reflecting light. They should be able to help you find the best mixture and combination for your budget.
If you are a DIY-er then this is definitely the option for you. It is a great weekend project.
Another pretty inexpensive option is to buy thin curtains for your existing windows. These can be lace curtains or just some opaque ones. These will allow a lot more light to come through than other curtains allowing you both light and privacy at the same time.
One of the great things about this option is the affordability of it. Whether you like to shop online or in the store you can usually find some inexpensive curtains that will fit your budget and needs. It is also pretty easy to do so it is perfect for those that would rather just get it taken care of quickly.
Now, if you are the kind of person that wants to have the option to completely block out the light from the outside as well as let it in sometimes, then do not despair—there are options for you as well. You can actually put two sets of curtains up in the same window. Place a set of opaque or lace curtains up first then attach a set of black-out curtains over top. This will give you the option to have a little light or no light at all.
Now there is the option of lamps. There are thousands upon thousands of lamps that you can choose from to use in your room. For instance, there are floor lamps, table lamps, and even lamps that attach to the walls like sconces. So really, all you need to do is find the ones that fit your budget and your room.
The great part about lamps is that you have greater control over the lighting in your room. With traditional overhead lighting you usually have an all or nothing amount of control, but with lamps, you can turn on some but not others making the lighting very customizable.
If you like the idea of controlling your lights with a switch and don’t want to walk to each lamp individually, you can always buy remotes for the lamps (unless they are WI-FI accessible then they will naturally be remotely controlled with a phone or mobile device). Remotes for lamps are pretty inexpensive. All you do is plug the lamp into the receiver and then plug the receiver into the wall outlet. Then, all you have to do is use the remote that comes with it. You can attach it to the wall just by your light switch or where a light switch would be located.
